Social Rules Apply

            Awareness Education Involvement

You don’t use a social network, you participate, and you become part of it. You are creating a common good; you can only take if you give.

Contribution is participation. Raise participation before raising money.

Social Media is Local First, if important enough it expands.

Social Media is Viral.

Social Media is Granular. Fractal.

Example: Twitter Vision

Social Media is a conversation. Not a Broadcast.

Social Media is an ecosystem, not a monoculture.

Social Media is Mobile

            iPhone

(SDK, Flash Android, Sprout[sproutbuilder.com])

Social Media wants to be free, the Social Mesh (easy to be a social media slut w/o thinking)

Guest Speaker: Simon Conlin

I did enjoy having this speaker if for nothing but the accent :D

But it was nice to have someone more interested in talking to us and showing us cool things than just advertising himself and trying to sell himself to us.

Overall I don't have strong opinions, I really enjoy this person ( Zack Booth Simpson)

I like the idea of turning interactive design into art.

Gesture Tek

A little late on this post I know, but just didn't have the time after we first went there to post anything.

So on Friday, October 12, 2007 we went to Gesture Tek

The day started off well enough safely finding our way to a parking spot nearby, but then we started walking down the street in the wrong direction, luckily the group of us five (Heather, Jeff, Brook, Karen and Me[Kilian]) ran into a very nice man who pointed us in the write direction.
Nice Man: "You look lost"
Us: "We are!"
(See Jeff's Post for an artist's representation)

So even though we arrived a little late we made it for most of the Vincent's Presentation. I was very amused by the gesture tek's video game system. I think it's a great idea for getting gamer boys and girls more active while still being able to enjoy video games.

The "touch screen" Gesture Panel was in my eyes a great learning tool, being able to touch the glass to leaf through different things so intuitively makes it easy for people to look through and learn content without realizing it.

The table fascinated me, sure it was a simple game of pong, but being able to manipulate the pictures and the way everyone seemed to be drawn to it showed how attractive interactivity is to people.

While amusing the floor advertisements are a great way to subliminally advertise. I didn't really get a chance to look at all the games it had, but I liked the things that just moved or changed depending on where you stepped.

Sheridan Visualization Design Institute

Today we visited Sheridan Visualization Design Intitute and saw a few things, different aspects of interactive multimedia.

Some of the first things we saw were some eTools, which I found interesting as I like the idea of interactive and possibly fun ways to teach.

Another thing that caught my interest were some "games" or "simulations" done using the OGRE game engine. Happy to hear it is free, I may download it if my computer can handle it.

The next things we were shown involved face recognition a form of pattern recognition that can be used in many things, such as animation something Sheridan is known for, and to perhaps replicate our faces into games like World of Warcraft, or other MMOG (massive multiplayer online games).

After a short wander (3 flights of stairs) we headed up to the Immersion Studio, from the now closed down I-mmersion for comfy office chairs and a show. The idea of polling the audience using tablets was compelling, and for the time it was made the graphics were almost creepy they were so well simulated. Personally I prefer things like this for audience interaction on the big screen.

Over all it was interesting, some fields I would be interesting getting into myself specifically the eTools though I know that is more interactive 101 as Dan said, I till am a teacher at heart.
On the other side though ways to making gaming more interactive and connected with the gamer spoils the inner kid and gamer girl within me.

It was a good experience
